A spectacular new facility for children opened this past December. It’s the National Children’s Museum of National Harbor. Just ten miles from downtown Washington D.C., this is a must see for your young ones when in the area.

The Children’s Museum is a cultural and educational center with interactive exhibits, art activities, focused on environmental and global health themes. The goal is to inspire children to care about and improve their world.

Currently the indoor area is in full swing. The Sesame Street Workshop group has its permanent home in the museum which means all the characters are available in interactive exhibits and the excellence of their educational video segments will be integrated into the Museum’s programming.

In the 3 and under gallery you’ll find a baby/crawler area with tactile experiences, an age appropriate climbing structure, a global lunch truck, sensory water bed and both gross and small motor play areas.

Our World is for children over the age of three. In the Map Zone children will pack their bags for travel in the airport-related exhibit. There is also a store, a school, a campaign office, a home, a fire station and a pizzeria.

In the World Cultures area you’ll find a world market, homes and shelters of the world, a kitchen area with foods and various stoves, an interactive clothing store, a transportation center and a language of the world area.

The Outdoor area to open in the spring of 2014 will include a vegetable garden, pinwheel wind generators, play areas in which to construct forts, fantasy play areas, an aquatic environment, water-powered energy sources and a large open amphitheater for theater productions.

The Museum is open seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Summer hours are 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The cost of entry is $10 per person of all ages. Babies twelve months and under are free. Active military families may enter at half price.
