Strengthen the Bond with Your Grandkids—Attend Summer Camp Together

Do you yearn for more one on one time with your grandchildren? Most of us do. But with the fast pace of daily life and the tendency of young people to glue themselves to pieces of technology, it can become difficult to even communicate with them.

How about a weekend or a full week of a combination of educational and outdoor fun with just you and your grandkids? It’s possible when you choose from a number of fantastic summer camping experiences designed specifically for grandparents and their grandchildren.

These camps are done either on college campuses or at beautiful camp destinations and they offer a wide variety of experiences. Some of them even offer scholarships for families needing financial help. Here are a few of the best choices:

G3 Camp at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan

G3 is a camping experience for grandparents and their grandchildren aged 8-12 years of age. The camp offers a combination of educational classes in art, history, engineering, math, technology or science during the day and evenings full of summer fun such as swimming, rock climbing, biking and games. Campers are housed in university housing and eat in college dining halls.

Camp Sagamore in the Adirondacks of Upstate New York

This camp for grandparents and grandchildren aged six and up offers a great camping experience. Offerings include music classes, hikes, crafts, woodworking and a whole host of outdoor camping fun. They have one week that is ladies only—grandmas and granddaughters. Fun.

Camp Icaghowan near the town of Amery, Wisconsin

Spend a week in the Wisconsin woods at a YMCA camp. Go canoeing, hiking, and enjoy telling stories around a campfire. This camp takes children from age 4-12 and is filled with nature-oriented fun. A real traditional summer camp experience.

Circus Camp in Pine Mountain, Georgia

Have you dreamed of running off to join the circus? Here’s your chance. Hosted by Florida State University’s Flying High Circus, this camp is part circus, part nature study. Take a class in circus arts and enjoy a special performance by the circus team. Enjoy classes about butterflies and hummingbirds and go golfing or swimming too.

There are many more summer camping experiences available for you and your grandkids. And while they aren’t inexpensive, those who have taken advantage of these unique experiences with their grandchildren report it was worth every bit of the cost.
