We’re all interested in staying mentally alert as we age. How can we accomplish that? What should we be doing and paying attention to in terms of our mental acuity? Studies are beginning to point toward specific physical and lifestyle traits that aid in the battle for sharp minds. Staying socially active is one indicator, as is staying fit and maintaining an appropriate weight. Other indicators are those persons who enjoy music and literature and who have a spiritual dimension to their lives. Various kinds of puzzles and healthy exercise are two more ways to stay mentally fit. Those who know several languages are shown to stay mentally healthy longer as are those who reverse diabetes or depression in their lives. In general a healthy weight and healthy interactions with others seem to be major players in keeping our minds sharp as we age.
