If you have a grandchild entering Kindergarten or first grade, one of the best gifts you can give is an assortment of books at beginning levels. Beginning readers need practice with books having a simple vocabulary and lots of rhythm and rhyme. Here are some lists of books and reading games appropriate for those children beginning the adventure of reading on their own.

The Education Dept. from the University of Wisconsin offers this list. Hubbard’s Cupboard has a series of printable readers at beginning levels. Agate books suggest the delightful Little Bear and Frog and Toad books for beginners, and Kidsread.com lists Cynthia Rylant’s Poppleton series. And when those beginning readers reach the early chapter book milestone they’ll want to look at this list from Lit for Kids.
