Monterey, California is known as the whale-watching capital of the world. Whalefest Monterey is happening this year on January 25th and 26th. Held each year during the migration of the gray whales, this huge benefit event takes place at the Old Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey Bay. This family event is free to the public. It is held in association with California State Parks and the Monterey Academy of Oceanographic Sciences (MAOS). There are many other marine organizations involved in producing this spectacular event and the funds donated are dedicated to preservation of the marine environment.

In addition to guided whale-watching tours from the wharf area, there are a number of presentations and exhibits. The Coast Guard offers tours of search and rescue boats and there are regularly-scheduled “Wharf Walks” in which the marine history of the area is presented by local historian, Tim Thomas. The local yacht club presents a remote-controlled sailing regatta and children will love their explorations of the sixty foot long model of a gray whale. There are Save the Whale presentations and a marine-themed concert on both evenings. Local hotels and other lodging choices offer reduced rates for those attending Whalefest.
